On March 5, 2020 the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to County Road 306 in the vicinity of the Avalanche Trailhead on a report of deceased male that who was discovered by a passing motorist.

Investigators from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Chaffee County Coroner’s Office and CBI all responded and an investigation ensued.

On March 9, 2020 an autopsy was completed and pathologists from the El Paso County determined that the injuries sustained by the male were self- inflicted, consequently the Chaffee County Coroners Office determined that the males cause of death was by manner of suicide.

The male was identified as Christopher D Hoherd, age 43, from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
