Inmates charges with attempted escape

On Friday, April 6, 2018, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office received information that inmates housed in the Chaffee County Detention Facility were actively trying to tunnel out of one of the housing pods within the detention facility. This information was brought to Sheriff John Spezze and a plan was immediately devised to enter the jail and investigate the information.

Members of the detention staff along with patrol personnel as well as tac team members entered the jail. During the investigation damage was discovered and contraband was discovered that was being used to cause the damage.

On April 14, 2018 Chaffee County Detective Robin Burgess issued arrest warrants for six inmates housed in the Chaffee County Detention Facility at the time the damage was discovered. Five of the inmates were charged with Attempted Escape, a class 5 felony, and Criminal Mischief, a class 5 felony. One inmate was charged with attempted escape which was a misdemeanor.

The inmates charged with the felony charges were identified as:

  1. Vincent M Mcdermott, age 27
  2. Dwayne A Miller, age 23

  3. Enrique H Parra Jr, age 37

  4. Darek J Ordaz, age 38

  5. Mathew T Porter, age 29

The inmate charged with misdemeanor charges was identified as:

  1. David R Bernal, age 38.

All inmates remain in the Chaffee County Detention Facility.

Damages to the detention facility were estimated at $14,000.00
