IOWA MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER INCIDENT IN GRANITE
On April 13, 2017 at approximately 2:07 pm the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a domestic disturbance between a father and son in the Granite area. The complainant advised that his son, Daniel J Korte, age 36 from Des Moines, Iowa was very intoxicated and had been threatening him with a large knife. The complainant also stated that his son made statements that he would shoot it out with police if they showed up. The complainant advised that his son was extremely agitated and was very delusional and would no doubt show hostility towards law enforcement. The complainant stated that there were firearms in his son’s possession as well in the home.
Deputies from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and secured a perimeter with the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the fact that the father was able to leave the home deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect via a cell phone, however this proved fruitless. Based on the threats the suspect made previously, the fact that he was armed and due to his aggressive nature the Chaffee County Tac Team was called to respond.
Upon arrival the tac team secured the perimeter and attempted to make contact with the suspect once again. After several attempts failed a percussion grenade was used outside the residence in an attempt to rouse the suspect in case he was sleeping due to his level of intoxication. A short time later the suspect came to the door but refused to come out stating that the only way he was coming out was if he was shooting. Tac personnel maintained verbal contact and were eventually able to persuade the suspect to exit the residence where he was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect was secured and was being led to a police vehicle when he became violent and kicked one of the tac team members in the face. The subject was then restrained further and was transported to the Chaffee County Detention Facility.
Daniel Korte will be charged with Felony Menacing, Assault to a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.
A search of the residence revealed that Korte was in possession of firearms in the residence, one of which was a loaded shotgun next to the door where he threatened to come out shooting.
