kayaker dies on Arkansas River near buena vista


Today (July 28) at approximately 12:08 pm an unidentified male died on the Arkansas River approximately 7 miles north of Buena Vista in Chaffee County, Colorado.

 According to witnesses the victim was kayaking when his boat became high centered on a large rock while in the Miracle Mile section of water. The witnesses related that the victim had stepped out of his kayak and was standing on the shoreline. They related that a short time later they observed the victim floating downriver. The victim was pulled to the shore approximately 200 yards downstream and emergency CPR was started immediately. Chaffee County EMS responded and continued CPR however efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful. The male party was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow to determine the cause of death.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Other agencies assisting with this incident were Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Chaffee County Fire, Chaffee County Search and Rescue and the Chaffee County Coroner.

NOTE: The victim was later identified as William Forshey, 54, of Austin, Texas.  The autopsy revealed he died as a result of drowning.
