Chaffee County Search and Rescue-South teams were called out early Sunday morning (September 1) after the wives of two mountain bike riders notified the communications center the night before that their husbands, ages 29 and 39, had failed to return from a ride in the Marshal Pass area.  Deputies were immediately alerted and at about 11pm Saturday discovered one of the men’s vehicle parked on CR 200 at a trail intersection.  Deputies located the second man’s car parked on Marshal Pass about an hour later.

Chaffee County searchers assembled at 6am Sunday and within an hour, teams were on the trail in search of the missing bikers.  The search continued on into mid-morning when fresh bike tracks were located in the vicinity of Sargents Mesa.  Saguache County SAR and sheriff’s deputies were enlisted in the search as well.  Finally, at around 9:45am Sunday, both men were found.  They had gotten lost but fortunately had stumbled across some campers who gave them food and put them up for the night at their campsite.  Neither man was injured in any way.  All search team members had returned to the team’s headquarters by 12:30pm.
